A California Girl’s New York Style Guide

Hello ladies! As you probably know I travel often from California to New York. On my first trip to NYC I was so lost, but ECSTATIC to play with different styles. How I dress on the west coast versus east coast absolutely varies, because for one, New York has seasons. I’ve also noticed I’m much more chic on the east coast, and street style in California. So here’s a little peek inside my head of what goes on when I’m packing my ritual trip to the fashion capital.

For Spring

My favorite time to be in the city! The ice from Winter is melting, but the air is still chilly. Winter is fun if you’re inside but it’s really hard to be stylish when it’s below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The idea of hell for California girl (me). Spring is perfect for light coats, and layered clothing. A colorful coat can really add a pop of style to your outfit. Sneakers are always a good idea because NYC is all about walking. It’s also a great time to be playful and layer skirts with jackets.

Here are a few outfits I’ve worn during spring:

For Summer

I thought I knew heat, until I experienced summer in New York. The city is filled with tourists, and fumes from transportation, that it can be quite difficult to enjoy a day out. No jackets are necessary because even the nights are hot. It’s the perfect time to bring out dresses, and shorts!

Here are some outfits I’ve worn during Summer:

For Fall

One of the best times of the year is Fall in New York City. It’s when the locals can enjoy a day off in Central Park, and a warm breeze. I also pack long sleeves, and comfortable outfits for exploring the city. Only because Fall time is the best time to be out and about in the big apple!

Here are some outfits I’ve worn in Fall:

For Winter:

I never experienced a Winter until I went to New York. While all the locals knew what to do, and wear, I was lost. My first time I had on a coat that was more cute than warm. It was a big mistake. I quickly learned that layers were going to be my best friend. This time of year is perfect for wearing sweats, and styling them up with a faux fur coat.

My Outfit For The Latin American Music Awards

Nothing brings me more joy than having a reason to get all dolled up. So you can imagine my joy when I got invited to the Latin American Music awards! That excitement quickly turned into stress when I realized it was less than a week away. I started to scroll through online shops when I came across, the one. I found it on Oh Polly, they also offer afterpay a great payment option!

The dress’s deep neckline was highlighted by puffed sleeves. It was definitely a dress a Disney Villain would wear, therefore I had to have it. I was a little nervous about ordering it online, I mean how would it fit? My busy school/work schedule left me with no option, so I ordered it. It arrived the day before the show and fit perfectly!

The top of the dress was a statement in itself so my hair had to be pulled back. It also flattered the back of the dress that had a low backline. With my hair pulled back, sparkle statement earrings paired well. My makeup was a soft smokey look, with gloss. I wore it with my vintage Prada handbag, and the look was complete.

Why You Should Go Thrift Shopping

Ever since I was a little girl, fashion has quite definitely been one of my passions. I was never good at sports but fashion, that I was good at. As I grew older I began expanding my wardrobe, often venturing to thrift shops to see what I could find. My friends admired my style, but often struggled to find the beauty in thrifting. Here is what I told them:

Your mindset when entering a thrift store should always be that, you’re on a treasure hunt. Your hair must be pulled back because you’re going on an adventure to find vintage gems. I have often found designer pieces at second hand stores. It’s also a place to find trendy items since just like history, fashion always repeats itself. The secret is to be patient, and thoroughly comb through the racks.

In a society where fast everything is everywhere, be patient, and be smart with your resources.

Thrifting is a great way to stop funding fast fashion, and lessen your ecological footprint. By buying recycled clothes you’re actually helping the environment! A new survey found that the average American throws away 81 pounds of clothing in a year. By donating your unwanted items, and buying secondhand we all win.

Some of my favorite items featured in these photos are thrifted:

Goodwill, Buffalo Exchange, A Second Chance

Postcards from Spring

Shaul & Top from Fashion Nova// Shorts Thrifted// Bag from Urban Outfitters// Boots from Charlotte Russe

Happy Spring babes! This is actually the most wonderful time of the year. Everything is blossoming, and the weather is absolutely perfect.

This look was inspired by festival season. I’ve never actually been to one, but if I ever did it would be JUST for the outfits lol. However, I do live in Southern California, so this kind of extraness is pretty typical on a fine Spring day 🙂 I’ve been obsessed with these white boots! Cowgirl details are a major trend this season. Contrary to the past year’s skin tight boot, this season’s popular trend is the wide legged type.

White is always a safe, Spring color. I wore a laced shaul with simple basics under to help exemplify the boots. Which I am clearly obsessed with. Sandals are not the only shoe you can wear when the warmer weather rolls around. Try adding a stylish boot to your Spring outfit to give it a trendy flare.

Feliz primavera chulas!

How to Style Cargo Pants

Sweater and jacket from Forever 21// Cargo pants from Fashion Nova// Shoes by Doc Martin// Bag from Dollskill

First blogged look of the year is 90’s/2000’s couture. Cargo pants are super trendy this season! They’re sold either patterned, plain or with chains. I got mine from Fashion Nova, and have worn them in various ways. In this particular look the style is grunge, street.

I don’t really like to wear any form of pants unless they’re high waisted. I suppose that is one trend from the 2000’s era that has not reemerged into the fashion world. It’s honestly just not as flattering as a higher jean might be. The pants are pretty baggy, but are also high waisted! So I paired it with a crop sweater to show that I have a waist, and that I am not a potato sack. Pairing the outfit with Doc Martins gave it the militant look I was going for.

Anytime I throw my hair up, I instantly feel empowered (so weird right?), It’s like making the statement that- yeah I have long hair, but I can put it up and get s*** done.

linked the cargo pants below, I got mine in a size extra small.

Patterned Pants

Pants & Top from Fashion Nova// Boots From Nordstrom’s

If it’s not already obvious, Bratz dolls are and forever will be my fashion inspo. The fact that they do NOOOT care what’s trending and mix it up with different patterns and colors is something I’ve always admired. Also, their chunky shoes were always ADORABLE! I have pretty big sized feet for my height so they showed me big hair and big feet could be used as a fashion statement. That’s why I fell in love with these rubbery platform shoes my mom gifted me. ❤

Pattern pants are a favorite staple piece right now. Whether I dress them up or down they’ll add detail to any look. Why dress bland when there’s so much color in the world?! The pants were extremely high waisted (which I loved! Anything that highlights the waist is a must for me) so I paired it with a silky, knotted top.

Cheetah Girl

Jumpsuit from Fashion Nova// Beret and Jacket from Forever 21

Cheetah girl cheetah siissssstuuuuuuuh. If you sang that then I love you and we’re now best friends. Animal print has been so trendy this fall and I am here for it. Colors can get old but patterns make outfits fun. When my friends saw this one piece they were like “omg you could be a cheetah for Halloween!” lol no. I’m going to wear this in a regular outfit because it deserves that. Why would I want to feel fierce one night of the year? I swear I felt cheetahlicious confident in this all day.

I toned it down with a light, denim jacket (if you don’t have one, you should! It’s a timeless staple piece) and my hair down. Simple details like that can really make a difference. For instance, if I would’ve had my hair up I would have felt too exposed. I also threw on this beret to add some chic vibes.

The old myspace caption “Rawr :D” would really be appropriate. Comment that on the picture I just posted on my instagram @lionlizz so I know where my blogger fam at ❤

Jaja no. Me encanta usar piezas únicas.

Brooklyn, NY

My little California eyes were NOT ready for these NY views! I literally felt like I was strolling through a Jennifer Gardner movie. New York is really as magical as it’s depicted in film.

Dress from Naked Wardrobe// Shirt from Forever 21// Shoes Fenty by Rihanna

Layers can work ANY season! You just have to accommodate to the weather, of course. I turned this simple, black dress into a fun Summer look by just adding an undershirt. The puffy sleeves on the blouse added the right amount of detail.

My Pumas have a been a life saver this Summer! New York is ALL about walking…I walk about 6 miles a day. I don’t know how, but I do LOL. So I needed something comfy but cute to get me through life this Summer. I enjoyed the change in scenery and life style, but I was excited to see Brad soon (my 2016 Toyota Prius lol).<3

POLKA DOTS

Dress and wedges from Forever 21

My style changes with the days, the seasons and of course my mood. Lately I’ve been feeling really chic and colorful! Patterns have been catching my eye and polka dots are super trendy this Summer. I actually have this dress in blue, shown in my birthday post, here, the fit was flattering + comfy. So when I saw it in orange polka dots I HAD to get it! Oh did I mention it was only $15? YES GIRL, make your way on over to your local Forever 21.

This dress was supper cheap and I was out in the streets of NYC with all the confidence haha. It really doesn’t matter about the brand or the price, as long as you feel good, that’s all that matters. 🙂 The wedges are also from Forever 21, don’t they just scream SUMMER?! I felt like my feet were presents! The peachy dress and soft blue really worked well together because they are both pastels, and with the same chic vibes. They were totally complementary of one another.
